How to Become a Member

The promotion of knowledge and training on best-practice methodologies and principles of
conservation is fundamental to the work of CIVVIH. The contemporary management of historic
cities, towns and villages encompasses key areas including reconstruction, resilience, and sustainable
development.

The Committee welcomes new members. To become a member of CIVVIH one needs to be an active
participant of a regional group, promoting, developing, and supporting local programmes through
activities, workshops or seminars. At a global level, one needs to participate in events such as the
World Heritage Day, General Assemblies, and/or facilitate partnerships with other organizations,
looking to broaden the profile of the International Committee.

In order to balance and increase memberships from all the different geographic regions of the world,
membership is open to a diverse range of relevant professional areas, and we especially encourage
the enrolment of emerging professionals.
There are several membership categories:

  • Expert Members have a high-level of knowledge and experience in historic cities, towns,
villages, and urban areas. They have expertise in architecture, urban planning, geography,
sociology, anthropology, biology, history, and the arts.
  • Expert Voting Member is a CIVVIH member nominated by his/her national ICOMOS
committee to be the representative of that national committee for voting purposes on
    CIVVIH.
  • Associate Members have some knowledge and experience in historic cities, towns, villages,
and urban areas and a desire to learn more. The category is for emerging professionals, early
in their heritage career, or more established professionals who have recently moved to this
    area of interest.
  • Honorary Members are existing members who have made significant contributions within
the field of historic cities, towns and villages and been awarded honorary status in
    recognition.
To become a CIVVIH Member you must provide:
  1. CIVVIH Application Form completed in English or French.
  2. Short curriculum vitae or resume highlighting work on historic cities, towns, villages, and
    urban areas (3-page limit).
  3. Motivation letter:
    a. Brief summary outlining your areas of knowledge and how they relate to your
experience in the field of conservation, planning and management of people and
the environment in historic cities, towns, villages and urban areas.
    b. Reasons for your interest and how can you contribute to the work of CIVVIH.
These documents must be submitted at least one month before the CIVVIH annual meeting.
Your application will be submitted to the CIVVIH Bureau members for approval.
The final endorsement takes place once a year during the CIVVIH annual meeting.
You will be notified after this meeting.
